Below is a list of things to include when you drop-off your computer:

  • Computer - the main system "box". Please do not include any other components unless otherwise requested. Other components include a keyboard, mouse, monitor, power cable, printer, router, cable modem, etc. Also, please don't bring any cords or cables.
  • Software - I may or may not use it, but I'd like to have the original software that came with your system. This will minimize trips to and from my home, should I need to rebuild your system. Most critical are the following:
    • Operating System - this is your legal copy of Windows (2000, XP or Vista). I no longer support any version of Windows before 2000.
    • Device Driver - this disk (or disks) has all the software "drivers" necessary for your system to communicate and interface with your hardware.
    • AV Software - Anti Virus software. Often times when disinfecting computers, it is necessary to uninstall the virus protection software. I'll need this to reinstall.
    • Applications - this includes your legal copy of Microsoft Office, Quicken, CD/DVD burning software, etc.
  • Laptops - If you are dropping off a laptop, please bring the power cord. Unlike desktop power cords, laptop power cords are specific to the manufacturer. I cannot troubleshoot on battery power alone.
  • Passwords - I need to have the username and password of the user account you'd like me to troubleshoot. Also, this account must have administrator privileges. I'd rather not spend time bypassing your security.
  • ISP - Your Internet Service Provider username and password. This is the username and password you received when you setup your Comcast, Verizon, etc Internet account. If I'm rebuilding your system, and you'd like me to restore your email access, I'll need this info.
  • Instructions - Any other special instructions or information you can provide that might be helpful. For example, if you'd like me to backup your critical data, I'll need to know where to find it.
Peripherals: Any special software installed on your computer that was needed to make external devices work properly may need to be reinstalled by you. These devices include printers, wireless keyboards/mice, iPods, Palm Pilots, digital cameras, etc. Most of these items need to be physically connected to your computer before installing the software for them.

Note: Microsoft and many other software vendors have implemented certain anti-piracy measures that will not allow you to install one copy of software on multiple computers. This software is designated as "activation required". For more info regarding activation software, click here.
