A letter from Retired Police Chief
Ed Taber...

To The Editor,
umerous
people have asked me why I am working to help get Bob Murstig elected
as the Umatilla County Sheriff. Bob Murstig worked with and for
me at the Pendleton City Police Department for a period of over
20 years. When Bob decided to run for Sheriff he contacted me and
pitched his reasons for running for Sheriff. He told me that his
#1 priority as Sheriff would be to work toward opening the jail
to capacity. Like most police officers, parole officers, and judges
in Umatilla County, Bob was frustrated by the fact that the people
of Umatilla County voted to spend millions of dollars for a 256
bed jail and the Sheriff is only using 125-135 beds. I have addressed
this same concern with the Sheriff and County Commissioners on
several occasions, to no avail. Since the jail opened in 1999,
the Sheriff has done nothing to increase the number of beds available
to keep criminals locked up. Prisoners are being released almost
before the police officer gets back on the street. There is no
room at the jail for most parole violators. The Judges sentence
convicted criminals to spend time in jail and they are released
in just days (sometimes within hours). Contrary to what some believe,
keeping criminals locked up in jail is a very crucial part of crime
prevention. If they are locked up, they can't commit crime. If
we can make real jail time a reality, maybe some people will choose
not to commit crime in Umatilla County.
ob
Murstig feels that it is time for new leadership in the Sheriff's
Department. Leadership that is innovative and creative. There is
need for a Sheriff that is responsive to community needs and is
willing to explore new ways of doing things. (Not just maintaining
the status quo and doing things the way they have always been done).
A Sheriff that takes an active leadership role in the CSEPP program.
A Sheriff that will take steps to stop the improper and mistaken
release of prisoners from jail. A Sheriff that will hold employees
to the highest standards of conduct. A Sheriff that is able to
build partnerships and alliances with other law enforcement agencies
to better protect the citizens of Umatilla County. A Sheriff that
is willing to redirect our limited resources to programs that best
serve all of Umatilla County.
am
working to help Bob Murstig get elected as the next Umatilla County
Sheriff because I believe that he will make the changes necessary
to improve law enforcement throughout Umatilla County. I agree
with Bob when he states that there is a need for change. People
in Umatilla County will now have the option of choosing to maintain
the status quo, or they can elect
Bob Murstig who will work for improved law enforcement services
in both the unincorporated and the incorporated areas of Umatilla
County.
Sincerely,
Ed Taber
