Often times when you're in the market for buying something and you talk to the wrong people, you end up with something you don't really need. Buying a computer is no different.

Before you open your wallet for that perfect PC, explore why you are buying one in the first place, then make a list of software you intend to use and design your PC around it.

For example, if you want a computer to keep in touch with friends and family via email and occasionally surf the web, then your hardware needs are not that demanding. On the other hand, if you're looking for a gaming PC or you plan to use it for home movie editing, then optimizing hardware performance is much more important.

Based on your needs, I can help you determine what you need: no more and no less. Send me an email; I give free advice.

Health Check

Sometimes your system just needs a tune-up, much like the engine in your car. Not only will this help prevent problems in the future, it will help your PC run faster and more efficiently. Here is my 10 point health check procedure:

  1. System configuration assessment. Not sure if your system meets the minimum system requirements to play HALO3 or install Publisher 2007? I document your current system configuration (i.e. how much RAM you have, CPU speed, hard drive capacity, etc.)
  2. System dusting. Dust can make the chips inside your computer run hotter and clog cooling vents. I spray the inside of your system with difluoroethane to remove any dust particles.
  3. Internals Check. I check for any loose wires, disconnected cables, missing screws, etc.
  4. In-vitro virus scan. I remove your hard drive from you system and scan it with the latest virus definition table.
  5. In-vitro spyware scan. Similar to a virus scan, but it searches your hard drive for tiny programs that send personal info to advertisers or hijack your browser.
  6. Disk Clean-up. I delete temporary files no longer needed that consume valuable disk space.
  7. Disk defragmentation (organize all your files where they can be accessed by your hard drive more efficiently)
  8. Windows Update (download and install any and all critical patches)
Antivirus Update (bring your virus definition table up-to-date if it isn't already)
  9. Component Driver Update. I update all system component drivers to their latest version recommended by the manufacturer.
  10. Restore Point. If you have Windows ME or XP, I create a system restore point of a known good configuration.

Network

Connect multiple computers in your home or small office and set them up to share files and printers (with or without wires)

Wireless is all the rage right now, but how slick is this relatively new technology? No doubt it's pretty cool to be surfing the web or checking your email from the comfort of your own backyard.

Regardless, connecting multiple computers together has never been easier. Almost all novice computer users can do this without any help from an IT pro.

Yet, sometimes if you miss just one piece of the puzzle, you can spend literally hours troubleshooting. You follow Microsoft's wizard only to find out that you answered one of the questions incorrectly.

I can help you connect multiple PCs, not only to the Internet but to each other as well. Wouldn't it be nice to print using the upstairs PC to the downstairs printer? Shoot me an email or read more.

Speed-Up

Speed up your computer by more than 30%

It's true! You can boost the overall performance of your PC by just adding some RAM, deframenting your hard disk, and shutting down a few programs that run in the background.

According to a recent business Winstone score, upgrading from 256MB to 1GB will increase your systems performance by approximately 31%.

More RAM is only part of the equation. There are other things you can do to maximize performance as well. For example, a new hard drive, a faster video card, or even a different ribbon cable could boost performance.

I can help you choose the right hardware for your system, including purchasing, installation and configuration. Perhaps your older system just needs a tune-up? Contact me or read more.

Upgrade

Upgrade your old clunker

Is it time for you to upgrade? If you have anything less than Windows 2000, than YES! Of course, it all depends on how you use your PC, but chances are, you're missing out on a lot of exciting new software if you stay with that old clunker any longer.

Perhaps you don't need a whole new PC, but you've run out of hard disk space. If capacity is the only thing you need more of, than buying a new PC is just a waste.

Send me an email and I can recommend the best most economical way to upgrade your existing system.

Clean

Malware is a term used to describe any and all code that can compromise your computer's security and your privacy. It includes both viruses and spyware.

If you have a virus or spyware and don't know how to get rid of it, you're not alone. Frequently, big companies like Symantec and McAfee will write small programs you can run to find and eliminate viruses after the fact.

However, sometimes you have to dig deeper and follow a cryptic procedure which often times requires you to edit your system's registry (a system configuration database that stores settings about installed hardware and drivers, user preferences, installed software, etc). Trust me, you can damage your system pretty badly if you accidentally delete or change the wrong key in the registry. I know; I've done it before.

If you know you have a virus, let me remove it for you.

Troubleshoot

Troubleshoot that annoying error message you keep getting

Everyone has probably seen the dreaded blue screen!

This is called the Blue Screen Of Death or BSOD. It's name is very fitting because usually when you see this, something has gone terribly wrong.

I used to see this screen a lot with older versions of Windows, but lately they've become more rare, in part thanks to Windows XP. Yet, you still might come across this screen. However, before you chuck that PC out the window, give me a call...

Actually, when the real problem is understood, the solution is usually obvious. Unfortunately, troubleshooting can suck up hours behind your terminal.
